Port of Rotterdam: Facts and History
The Port of Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe and one of the most impressive port areas in the world. Those sailing through the port witness centuries of history unfolding before their eyes: from the medieval dam in the River Rotte to the modern Maasvlakte 2. Below, you will find more information regarding the scale, ownership, history, and economic significance of the Port of Rotterdam.
What is the official name of the Port of Rotterdam?
The Port of Rotterdam does not have a specific proper name like some other ports. Officially, it is referred to as the Haven van Rotterdam or, in English, the Port of Rotterdam. The managing body is named Havenbedrijf Rotterdam N.V. (Port of Rotterdam Authority). The headquarters of the Port of Rotterdam Authority are located in the World Port Center on the Wilhelminakade in Rotterdam. The organization employs over 1,200 staff members and is responsible for the management, operation, and development of the Rotterdam port area.
How big is the Port of Rotterdam?
The Port of Rotterdam covers over 12,500 hectares—or more than 100 square kilometers. Stretching from the city center all the way to Maasvlakte 2, the port extends approximately 40 kilometers toward the North Sea. For comparison: the entire Port of Rotterdam area is larger than the entire municipality of Utrecht. Running through the port are 1,500 kilometers of pipelines for the transport of liquids and gases, and there is storage capacity for billions of liters of petroleum.
Who owns the Port of Rotterdam?
The Port of Rotterdam is managed by the Port of Rotterdam Authority N.V., a non-listed public limited company. It has two shareholders: the Municipality of Rotterdam (approximately 70%) and the Dutch State (approximately 30%). The Port Authority leases port sites to companies, handles shipping operations, and develops new port infrastructure. The Port Authority was privatized on January 1, 2004, separating from the former Municipal Port Authority of Rotterdam.
Is the Port of Rotterdam the largest in the world?
No, the Port of Rotterdam is no longer the largest port in the world, but it remains the largest port in Europe. From 1962 to 2004, Rotterdam was indeed the largest port globally. Subsequently, the Port of Rotterdam was surpassed by a number of Asian ports, such as Shanghai, Singapore, and Ningbo-Zhoushan. In terms of cargo throughput, Rotterdam currently ranks somewhere between seventh and tenth place worldwide; however, within Europe, the Port of Rotterdam remains by far the largest, with an annual throughput of over 435 million tons.
Which port is larger, Antwerp or Rotterdam?
Rotterdam is clearly larger than Antwerp. The Port of Rotterdam handles approximately 435 million tons of goods annually, while the Port of Antwerp (now merged to form the Port of Antwerp-Bruges) handles around 280 million tons. This makes Rotterdam the largest port in Europe, followed by Antwerp-Bruges in second place. Rotterdam is also larger in terms of surface area. Historically, the two ports have been rivals, although they also collaborate on certain issues, such as sustainability and connections to the hinterland.
How much does the Port of Rotterdam earn?
The Port of Rotterdam is of great importance to the Dutch economy. The added value generated by the port amounts to over 45 billion euros per year, accounting for approximately 6% of the Dutch Gross Domestic Product. The Port of Rotterdam Authority itself generates an annual revenue of approximately 710 million euros and regularly distributes more than 120 million euros in dividends to its shareholders (the municipality and the state). An estimated 70,000 people are directly employed in the Port of Rotterdam, with another 200,000 employed indirectly.
What is transported in the Port of Rotterdam?
A wide variety of goods arrives at the Port of Rotterdam. The most important product groups are containers (approximately 14 million TEU per year), crude oil and petroleum products, chemical products, coal, ores, and grain. The petrochemical industry is a major consumer, featuring refineries operated by companies such as Shell in Pernis. Crude oil originates from many different countries—in recent decades, including Russia, the Middle East, and North Africa. Containers arrive from Asia, North America, and other locations worldwide. From the port, these supplies are distributed to the European hinterland—including Germany, Belgium, and France—via the Rhine, inland waterways, rail, and road.
History of the Port of Rotterdam
The history of the Port of Rotterdam dates back centuries. Around 1270, a dam was constructed in the small river Rotte—the very river that gave the city its name. Goods were transshipped on this dam from seagoing vessels onto smaller riverboats, and thus Rotterdam's oldest harbor came into being. For centuries, the port remained a thriving yet relatively modest trading city, overshadowed by Amsterdam and Middelburg. Sandbanks made the route to the sea treacherous for large ships.
This changed between 1866 and 1872 with the construction of the Nieuwe Waterweg, a wide canal cutting straight through the dunes near Hoek van Holland. As a result, the Port of Rotterdam became easily accessible to large seagoing vessels for the first time, and the port experienced explosive growth. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, new docks were constructed at Feijenoord and along the southern bank of the Nieuwe Maas.
World War II and Reconstruction
The Second World War was a dark chapter for the port city of Rotterdam. On May 14, 1940, the city center of Rotterdam was completely destroyed by German bombing, and the port also suffered heavy damage. Even more bombing raids followed during the war. After the war, reconstruction began, during which the port and the city were rebuilt in a more modern form. The Old Port, which had survived the bombings, was restored at a later date. Historic ships and quays were also destroyed during the Second World War.
Nieuwe Waterweg, Europoort, and Maasvlakte
After the war, the Port of Rotterdam expanded rapidly towards the North Sea. Europoort was commissioned in the 1950s, followed by the Maasvlakte in the 1960s and 70s. These new port areas were largely reclaimed from the sea. In 1962, Rotterdam became the largest port in the world—a position it maintained until 2004. Maasvlakte 2, a further expansion of 2,000 hectares, was constructed and commissioned between 2008 and 2013. This represents one of the largest construction projects in the history of the port city.
Old Port and City Port
In addition to its modern port facilities, Rotterdam is also home to the Oude Haven—the city's historic heart. Situated close to the city center, between the Willemsbrug and the Witte Huis, the Oude Haven is a popular area to explore. Historic ships lie moored here, and the district boasts a lively dining and nightlife scene. The Oude Haven served as Rotterdam's original port, having been in active use for centuries before the modern port facilities even existed. Both the Oude Haven and the City Harbor can be experienced daily via a sightseeing cruise departing from the city center.
Developments and Growth
The Port of Rotterdam is in a state of constant evolution. New developments focus on sustainability (hydrogen, wind, and solar energy), the digitalization of shipping, and the continued strengthening of its position as a logistics hub for Europe. The port's growth over the centuries has established Rotterdam as the premier port city of the Netherlands, boasting a location that—thanks to its direct connection to the Rhine and its hinterland (encompassing 460 million inhabitants within reach)—is unrivaled. It is of vital importance to both the Netherlands and all of Europe that the Port of Rotterdam continues to thrive.
The port itself collaborates with numerous third parties: cargo-handling and transshipment companies, shipping lines, logistics partners, and the shipping industry itself. The Port of Rotterdam Authority leases port sites to third parties, who in turn process containers, petroleum, and other products. In this way, the port continues to evolve as a dynamic network of companies. Within this network, inland shipping serves as a vital link: inland vessels connect Rotterdam with Germany, Belgium, and France.
Goods Flows and Trade
The Port of Rotterdam receives goods from all parts of the world. Containers arrive from Asia, North America, and other locations, while crude oil is imported from countries such as Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Nigeria. South Africa supplies, among other things, coal for the European energy market. A large portion of these goods is subsequently transported onward to the hinterland via inland waterways, rail, and road. Upon arrival, containers are stacked on quays, handled by cranes, and then transported further. In this way, no cargo is lost or goes missing during the handling process.
Discover the harbor from the water
The Port of Rotterdam is best explored from the water. Those wishing to discover the port will encounter quays, containers, cranes, and historic vessels along the way. Any Dutch person can explore the port in this manner by taking a sightseeing cruise. International visitors, too, enjoy coming to Rotterdam to discover the port. From the water, you can explore not only the modern terminals but also the Old Port in the city center—the only part that remained largely intact following the bombings. Following the post-war reconstruction, some of the old quays were closed to shipping, while others were reopened to accommodate water sports and hospitality venues.
At Hoek van Holland, the mouth of the Nieuwe Waterweg marks the transition between the port and the North Sea. Here, you can watch seagoing vessels arrive and depart, depending on the tides. The corner where the river meets the sea is a unique spot for observing maritime traffic. During a sightseeing cruise, you will pass this corner on your way to the Maasvlakte.

Enjoy a culinary experience in the Port of Rotterdam, where delicious food is served on board, accompanied by unlimited beer, wine, or soft drinks. You have the freedom to chart your own route through the Port of Rotterdam and along the Nieuwe Maas. In other cities, such as Amsterdam and Utrecht also possible.
